Narasimha Rao was one of India's shortest-serving Prime Ministers, serving three years from 1991 to 1994. He is also known for two other milestones in Indian history - interim appointment of the RPV Narasimha Rao to lead the country after the assassination of Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, who had resigned over his inability to get support for controversial economic policies; and the acceptance of nuclear weapons by India. Born on June 22, 1929 in Hyderabad, he served as an economist with government services before entering politics at age 34. He served briefly as a Congressman before becoming a junior minister in 1971 under Indira Gandhi. When Sanjay Gandhi was assassinated four years later, he became a trusted aide to Indira Gandhi. In 1983, Narasimha Rao became chief minister of Andhra Pradesh and was able to implement a number of reforms, including a reduction in the size of government. The Congress Party grew stronger in the state and he rose quickly through the ranks as vice president. In 1989, he served as union finance minister briefly before being given the premiership at age 52. He also served as defence minister for a year from 1989 to 1990 as part of Rajiv Gandhi's government. In 1990, he succeeded Indra Gandhi as Prime Minister after her death and remained in that role until his own death in 2004 at the age of 79. Rao was one of the founders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) but later resigned from it and returned to mainstream party, Indian National Congress. He was a member of the Congress Working Committee and Central Election Committee for several years. He campaigned vigorously throughout India to help restore Congress as a political force and was one of the major players in the coalition that unseated Narasimha Rao’s successor. Rao favored pro-business policies, to include privatization efforts that helped remove governmental controls over certain industries while opening up more to competition from foreign companies. He also oversaw the creation of a national stock exchange, formalized deregulation policies and raised interest rates to stabilize the rupee. Narasimha Rao was born on June 22, 1929 in Hyderabad . He studied economics at Osmania University before receiving his master's degree from Harvard University six years later. He also participated in the Colombo Plan (an Asian planning seminar), where he studied Keynesian economics. While at school, he became involved in student politics and became president of the Andhra Student Congress during his final year at Osmania University. He was also active in the Indian National Congress, or Congress Party. He married Kamala in 1956, where they had two children - a daughter named Chitra and a son named Rajiv. Narasimha Rao was born with an unsightly cleft palate that required surgery shortly after his birth. While growing up, he did not have regular access to proper medical care. After attending college, he worked for the government of Andhra Pradesh for four years before accepting a position with the Planning Commission of India in 1961. He served as commissioner of the commission from 1968 to 1972 before becoming commissioner of research and statistics from 1971 to 1973. cfa1e77820
